Johnson, as he was affectionately called, was born on July 17, 1938 to the late Oscar Johnson Sr. and Georgia Johnson of Rougemont, NC.  He was blessed to have three siblings, Margaret, Edgar, and Roy.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Viola, and son, Lawrence Mayo.

Oscar retired “With Full Honor” from the United States Air Force after 20 years of dedicated service.  He then spent 25 years teaching at Johnston Community College in Smithfield, NC while serving as the head of the Horticulture Department.   He also officiated and coached sports in the Wayne County area for 30 years and was an avid fisherman.

After retirement, Oscar could be found almost daily at the family business, “Sweet Grandma’s” Grill in Goldsboro.  He was a faithful member of The Lord’s Vineyard UPC for 40 years serving in various capacities.  His knowledge of the Word and his love for God, his pastor, David Hayes and wife, Christa, and church family was evident.  A cherished memory of some of the older members was his talent of illustrating bible lessons through his artwork.

Oscar leaves to cherish his precious memories; his children, Simona Renea Lane and Mark Anthony Johnson; grandchildren, Alexander Lane, Anthony Lane, Jaelen Johnson, Lawren Ham, and Donovan Mayo; extended children, Terry Lofton, Larry Lofton, Harry Lofton, and Charles Lane Jr.; brother-in-law, Amos Umstead; sisters-in-law, Rosa Lee Johnson and Helen Johnson; and a host of other family members and friends.
